Universidadede Aveiro (UA) – Portugal

Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro (UA) quickly became one of the most dynamic and
innovative universities in Portugal. Now a public foundation under private law, it continues to
implement its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate
research and promote cooperation with society. Attended by 15,000 students on 57
undergraduate and 127 postgraduate programs, UA has achieved a significant position
amongst HEI’s in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its
infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its 1656 staff.
The UA is a highly regarded institution of research led education, constituted by university
departments, research units, polytechnic schools, interface units, and a vocational education
network. Its integrated structure permits the articulation and harmonization of the teaching
and research environments, and enables the construction of individual educational paths, from
post-secondary technological specialization programs to doctoral degrees.
Since 1998, UA integrates the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), a leading
international cluster of research intensive universities, with a collective emphasis on
innovation, creativity, and societal impact driving the development of a knowledge-based
economy.
UA is also an active member of the University Technology Enterprise Network (UTEN). Its main
objective has been to accelerate the development of a sustainable, globally competitive,
professional technology transfer and commercialization network within Portugal to increase
Portugal’s international competitiveness in university–based science, and technology transfer
and commercialization.
In the context of UTEN, UA has worked closely with other universities focusing on Capacity
Building to foster a range of technology transfer and commercialization activities and offices,
together with industrial liaison programs, mostly devoted to fostering entrepreneurial
environments, launching technology based start-ups, and bringing ideas from the laboratory to
the market. UTEN’s mission gradually evolved to build a professional, globally competitive and
sustainable technology transfer and commercialization network in Portugal oriented toward
international markets.
