KTT Ecosystem: Opportunities and Challenges in Vietnam

Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) organized VETEC Networking Event entitled “Knowledge and Technology transfer ecosystem: opportunities and challenges” on April 8th 2019 within the framework of VETEC project under the Erasmus + Key Action 2 programme.

VETEC project aimed to create a network of Knowledge and Technology transfer between Europe and Vietnam with active participation of HUST, Hue University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, TU Dresden in Germany, University of Aveiro in Portugal and other seven supportive members, including the Belgian embassy in Vietnam. 

Speaking at the event, HUST President Hoang Minh Son said knowledge and technology transfer is an inevitable trend, discussion in this event will help Vietnamese universities update helpful insight in the current context of technology transfer.

Opening the meeting, Mr. Tom Corrie, Deputy Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation to Vietnam also pointed and focused on strong cooperation agreement between EU and Vietnam. Vietnamese involved in more than 16 projects, and  Hanoi University of Science and Technology was an active partner in Erasmus + Key Action 2 with many successful projects as VETEC.

Belgium Embassy in Vietnam represented by Mr. Ivo Hooghe, First Secretary in charge of development cooperation also actively participated in the networking meeting and shared his opening remarks.  

The invited speakers from Ministry of Science and Training (Mr. Tu Minh Hieu, National Agency for Technology entrepreneurship and Commercialization development) and VNPT-Technology (Mr. Tran Huu Quyen, CEO) also pointed out opportunities and challenges, solutions of industries and ministries in implementing technology transfer, innovation and start up ecosystem in their area.

Prof. Jan Cornelis, Pro Vice Rector, VUB, Belgium presented that KTT was complex / highly context-dependent and should match the university’s vision and it is necessary to build a strategic research platform at universities.


Based on the training result of knowledge-technology transfer for nearly 30 leaders and officers from HUST, Hue University and Can Tho University, some effective models were introduced at the event after more than two years of implementation with the assistance of European experts. Dr. Duong Manh Cuong, HUST representative from Vietnamese partners presented actors within current Vietnam KTT ecosystem, STI situation in Vietnam and some suggestions.

Representatives from European universities and VNPT, Vietnamese universities shared their real-life experience in panel discussion on KTT ecosystem from concept to practice.
